Wednesday Again...

....I have a cunning plan...

....normally, during my weekly mini-pool tournaments, we listen to laid back music... everyone kinda likes it... James Taylor, Neil Young.. mild stuff... keeps the tempo low... you know, the kinda stuff to keep the band of miscreants from running rampant through my garage... well, tonight it will be different.... yep, you guessed it... heh.... Red Hot Chili Peppers... maybe their jarring tunes will disorient my fellow drunks just enough to give me the upper hand... I have been desensitizing myself to the effects of the Flea for the past week... one can never be too prepared.... so, we shall see... although.... if they protest, and ask for Jim Croce, I'm fucking doomed....

Aberlour...

...tonight, I will be sampling Aberlour for the first time... I'm looking forward to it.. I was just informed that my name is slated on the roster for cooking dinner tonight... and, a request has been made... so, spaghetti it is... one cannot turn down such a fervent plea for sustenance.... so, as the honorable fellow I am, the call shall be answered… hey, what can I say?… I like to see happy women…

...update.. with that said.. the Wife and I are sitting here listening to some Robbie Williams.... and, we'd like to dedicate this little song to all of our troops overseas... may they stay safe until coming home.... and, to the husbands, wives, and families here stateside.. consider this song for you as well... so, to all of you military families... have a good weekend...

Pooltable Results...

...well, I surprised the hell out of myself... I won, 4 to 5 over my arch nemesis, Steve... so, in case you were wondering, I rocked.... the lion was not fed after all.... and, I survived to fight another day.... having said that, it is a wonderful day outside... and, I am going to the range this afternoon to exercise my AR-15... I'll get back to you soon with rich tales of rifle cleaning, getting bore cleaner on my keyboard, and the smell of gunpowder on a sunny afternoon... heh... later...

Research Project...

...wow.... research?... unreal... some people have all the luck, I suppose....

After Action Report..

...well, I survived the Hiwassee excursion... but, only just.... the human body was not meant to drink that much Maker's Mark, Old Charter, Crown Royal, and Natural Light Ice.... it was most definitely a Bourbon kinda party... Scotch would have been out of place... so, the hangover this morning was of proportions usually reserved for biblical plagues...

...on the bright side, I can say that I had a chance to meet some fine people... all of them new acquaintances... with the exception of Kenny... and, I managed to get to play with some fine musicians... a first for me was having a harmonica accompany me as I sang "A Pirate Looks at Forty"... it was a wonderful time....

...Kenny came over today, and we played a little pool... but, both of us were in that well trod "fragile" place that often happens after a night of cheap bourbon.. so, no drinks were consumed whilst playing... still, the memories created last night were well worth the after effects that the morning brought.... heh... good times, people... good times....

One Word...

...hungthehellover....

Not Tonight....

....not posts tonight, kiddies... find some place else to roam, you bastards.. I'm playing guitar with a friend... so, check back tomorrow.... sorry.... have a good night...

Zevon again...

...and, it looks like LeeAnn is stirring the pot.. (yeah, check her comments)... heh... well, Matty O'Blackfive decided to ask me to SING at the party going on at Madfish Willie's.... (scroll to the bottom of his comments)... so, I dedicated one to that Perv, Harvey... go on over and have a read... or, if you'd rather skip all that crap, and just hear the song... HERE it is....

Sorry, Folks...

....maybe it is a combination of events..... and, maybe it is the music I am listening to.... but, I'm getting hamMERD tonight.... y'all have a good night.... I am seeking shelter from this wee storm... as Buffett said, I am searching for the "One Particular Harbor"...... in any case, g'night, children..... I leave you with some vintage Zevon.... y'all have a good night, now.... I'll be busy looking for the bottom of this bottle of Scotch... don't worry folks....plenty of dirty jokes and Service poems in the morning.... momentary lapse of the concentration... that's all.... but, please.... Don't let us get sick...

Scots/Irish Music....

... sitting here... watching the snow fall out the window.... nursing my first Scotch of the evening... having just been forced to watch "My Fair Lady".... AGAIN... ahhhh.. I am safe in the manroom once more... with computer, gun cabinet, guitar, and stereo... damn... every man should have a place in their home where they can retreat to... and, this is mine... and life is good....

...last night, I taught myself a new song... it is by the Scottish group, "The Proclaimers".... I like it.... CHECK IT OUT.....

...also, Geoffrey left a link to a kickass Celtic song in my comments.... so, HERE IT IS... give them both a listen... they are totally different... but, both beautiful in their own ways...

..G'night.... I'm gonna read some blogs, finish the Scotch, and watch the snow fall...

Amber Nectar...

...here it is.. Valentine's Day... when lurve is supposed to be the word of the day... and, here I sit... about to piss off a few of my fellow blogbuddies... most notably, Jack, Kim, Matt, and Donnie.... what am I going to do to kill these relationships?... yep, you guessed it... do a post on Scotch...

...in my defense, I have to start this off by saying that I am merely answering a lone cry in the wilderness... one that echoed through a mega-liquor store somewhere... a Man in distress... in front of the daunting Scotch section.. Ole Buddy Don, the Wandering Hillbilly, sent me this heartbreaking plea...

"hey eric,

tuther nite the wife n me wuz down to the likker store whar we wonted to git a quart of jack daniels, witch they wuz out of quarts so we wuz thankin bout trine sum scotch sangle malt. thang wuz, they had about fifty differnt brands, sum frum this island or that highland area, moren we could shake a stick at. we ended up gittin sum black bush, witch tiz ok but taint frum scotland. (miz bd has fond memories of sum black bush cumin in rite on time durin a trip to greece or sumsuch).

innywho, ye seem to know yer way round a likker store n id lack to request that ye post sum of yer wisdum on the subjeck. ifn ye wuz a'gonna spend sum money on a sangle malt frum scotland, whar wood ye start? btw, they gut likkers frum scotland that costs over $70 fer a bottle, so we dont wonta bust the bank on sumthin taint wurth drankin.

thankee in advants in hopes ye mite could doot
buddy don"

...so, faced with such a plea, I, being a man of honor, am leaping into the fray to provide advice... although, I must say... I am not an expert on Scotch... I know what I like, and I'm one helluva consumer.. but, alas, not an expert.. even the motto of the illustrious Rocky Top Brigade, hosted by South Knox Bubba seems to be chiding me into action....

"Be it resolved then, and known to all men of good standing (and women too, for that matter) throughout the land that the Rocky Top Brigade is hereby enjoined in the battle for truth, justice, and a good single malt Scotch whiskey for around $20.

...so, on to the recommendations... I will be quoting from my autographed copy of Mike Jackson's wonderful book.... "Scotland and its Whiskies"....

I am not going to talk about any Whiskies that are over 50 bucks.. Buddy Don is new to Scotch, so, he needs to start out small... no sense in putting up 80 bucks for a Laphroaig that he won't enjoy... know what I mean?... anyway, here are the "SWG Recommendations for the Novice Scotch Drinker"...

#1. The 10 year old Glenmorangie... you'll find it finished in various different casks.. port, sherry, and bourbon... don't worry about that... just dive in and pick one... should be around 35-45 bucks... it is the leading selling Single Malt in Scotland... a land inhabited by Scots... so, they should know... here is a Jacksonian description.... "spicy and salty, but delicate...perhaps too "light" of a flavor for some"... in my mind, this would be a winner for the Hillbilly to start with...

#2. The 10 year old Talisker... the only whisky made on the Isle of Skye... once again, should be able to pick one up for 35 to 45 bucks... this is one of my favorites.... again, Jackson says, "a peppery flavor... often attributed to the ridge of volcanic mountains near the distillery".. and no, it does NOT taste like lava.. go ahead, you'll enjoy it...

#3. The 10 year old Bowmore... this is one of the many incredible whiskies made on the Isle of Islay.. and, of these whiskies, Bowmore is perhaps the least "peaty"... it has a sea salt, burnt flavor, and is wonderful.. of the three whiskies I have recommended, this one would be your most "adventurous" one... you'll either love it, or hate it..

...so, Hillbilly... go forth and purchase Scotch.... oh, and let us know how it turns out... if you think the taste of these is too strong alone, feel free to add a wee bit of non-sparkling water to your drink... it takes the edge off, and allows the distinctive flavors to be found... heh... enjoy..

...now, let the hatemail commence..

Quote of the Day..

...raise a toast tonight...to one of my heroes...Mr. Dean Martin...

"I once shook hands with Pat Boone and my whole right side sobered up. "

Christmas Party Aftermath...

You know you are at an interesting party when you meet someone....and they give you their phone number....and at the BOTTOM of the little scrap of paper, they write something like this..."Mark and Susanne's Christmas Party"....when you inquire as to the reason for this, they respond thusly....

"We'll probably get drunk tonight, and when you find this in the morning, you'll have NO IDEA what this number is for, so this is just a reminder.."

Actually, it was quite prophetic...because drunk we did get....I was doing fine on the blend...Dewars, I believe....until the Scotch Goddess showed up with a bottle of 12 year old Macallan...that was the final straw...pure nectar of the Gods it was...but, I digress...

A good time was had by all concerned...much guitar was played..much drunken yelling singing was done....much to the amusement of the sober members of the congregation...and many new friends were alienated made....

Oh, and back to the "number" I was handed? Don't go getting all excited...pervs...

A few months ago, I bought my Brother a Meucci pool cue....the base of the cue is Ivory...I have one just like it, but I wanted to get his customized....so, I had a friend of mine inlay a silver plate into the ivory so I could get his initials engraved on it....well....you may find this hard to believe,....but finding someone who WILL engrave on a piece of silver that is embedded in ivory on a pool cue is damn near impossible....until last night, that is....during the pre-drunk conversation, one young lady mentioned that her father was a master jeweler, or something like that....and he engraved stuff by hand...so, I mentioned the pool cue....and she said that her Father could do it for me...and she gave me her number....see?...anyway, it is going to cost me a damn FORTUNE to get it engraved...but at least that monkey will be finally off my back....somehow, the words "master jeweler" should never be used when my cash is involved...not even at Christmas...

About Last Night....

I had the distinct honor of giving a "Southern Baptism" to two of my workmates last night...one of them is from the Dominican Republic, and the other is a Canadian, and neither of them had ever sampled any REAL Tennessee Moonshine...heh...well, they got their chance last night...They enjoyed it....I actually think that they enjoyed the Shine more than they did the guitar playing and singing....heh....although, AFTER having a few shots of that homemade booze, perhaps they could stand my playing a little more.

Anyway, here was last night's playlist...

Hotel California
Down and Out
Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain
Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)
Fire and Rain
Ain't No Sunshine (When She's Gone)
Abilene
Heart and Soul
Mary Had a Little Lamb (SRV Version)
Tequila Sunrise
Rocky Top
Who'll Stop the Rain
Thrasher (by Neil Young)
and about 40 different Blues songs....

Hey, who needs a REASON for a party....we just decided to get together and play, sing, drink, and eat pizza....of course, we were all hurting a little this morning...but who cares? Life is too short NOT to have fun every chance you get....

Dahlonega, Here I come...

Well, it won't be long now till I finally get to meet some REAL bloggers...

This gathering of North Georgia bloggers sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun...however, I've heard the Daxman talk about the "North Georgia Blog-meet", I must confess that I feel like I might be being a bit of a gatecrasher...since I'm techinically a *Southeastern Tennessee Blogger* ...anyway, I'm going...I guess they'll just have to kick me out...but,

I'm bringing some booze...so, maybe that will make them happy enough to see me that I'll be able to stay for a while...

One thing that I find really interesting is that this meet-up/boozefest/joke-telling-session is being held in a mysterious location known as "Blood Mountain"...the day after Halloween....sounds kinda creepy...heh..

Personally, I can't wait to get down there....I live about 2 hours away, so I'm starting out tomorrow morning around noon....so, maybe I'll be a few drinks ahead of some of them by the 3pm start time...although, the Acidman DID say he might get there a little early......but, I did call Caruso's, and they told me that they only serve beer and wine.....so, I guess I'll have to wait for a nice Scotch and water back at the cabin...*provided I survive the dinner!*

See you guys soon!

As an afterthought, I hope that some people in the Chicagoland are are reading this...and are hatching the idea of a "Corner of the Bar Gang" meet-up some time in the future...

I'm BACK...go and VOTE for me..

I'm just back from a drunken mini-vacation in the beautiful...if slightly over-crowded Tennessee mountains.....much fun was had by one and all, and photos of me sleeping on the bar will be posted once they are developed...anyway, I get back, and check my blogroll, and I'll be DAMNED if I haven't been shortlisted for my recipe for an Antarctic Cosmo...so, run right over to Madfish Willie's Cyber Saloon, and cast your vote for me...and remember...only hookers drink cosmos....
